Visit and hear from an inspirational social entrepreneur who is tackling local issues and creating a lasting change. A chance to learn about social enterprise, its challenges and opportunities and to think about what it might mean for your Big Local area.
Tang Hall area of York suffered when essential services and facilities were removed. This left the community with a lack of things to do and places to meet others. Sue Williamson saw this as a challenge and used it as an opportunity to turn disadvantage into assets. She set up SMART CIC. Operating out of a local community hub, SMART CIC provides reasonably priced clubs, activities and events and offers music industry training to people facing disadvantages.
The day will help participants understand the potential of social entrepreneurs to address issues identified in Big Local Plans.
You will have a chance to learn more about the potential of social entrepreneurs and social enterprises and to think about what this might mean for your area.

- Look under the bonnet – understand the business model, the finances and how they keep going.
- Learn about the issue they are addressing, and how the venture tackles it.

Social entrepreneurs are working on high impact, sustainable ventures addressing tough issues that are faced in Big Local areas. We know you are trying to tackle similar issues, and we know you want to make those changes last.
Sue Williamson is Managing Director of Tang Hall SMART CIC. Come and hear how Sue set-up her social enterprise from scratch 5 years ago and how she’s grown a thriving business. Sue currently works with over 150 people each week, employs 12 staff and is waiting to move into bespoke premises including a purpose-built recording studio located within a newly developed community hub in her Big Local area.
Sue will share stories of her journey so far, her unique blend of income streams, her successes and her challenges. Sue was awarded runner up in the Social Enterprise Yorkshire & the Humber’s New Start Social Enterprise 2016 for this venture

The event is free for anyone who lives or works in a Big Local area and we will provide lunch. We also provide financial support for travel, childcare and other care costs to residents in Big Local areas. We can also book and pay for travel in advance.
